Considering adult inguinal hernia surgery in Seoul? Learn about laparoscopic repair, mesh, surgery costs and recovery at Damsoyu Hospital.
Start with your situation
An inguinal hernia occurs when bowel or fatty tissue protrudes through a weakened area of the abdominal wall into the groin. Damsoyu Hospital assesses the area by examination, with ultrasound when needed, and performs laparoscopic repair. In adult men, the hospital commonly reinforces the repair with mesh after closing the hernia opening.
How is an inguinal hernia assessed?
The clinician examines the bulge and checks whether it changes when you cough. Ultrasound is used if the diagnosis is unclear. The examination also establishes whether the hernia is in the groin, at the belly button, or elsewhere in the abdominal wall.
Why does a bulge develop?
Bowel or fat can push through a weak area in the abdominal wall. Damsoyu describes how aging and repeated strain from heavy lifting, a chronic cough, or straining during bowel movements can put pressure on the abdominal wall.
The location helps identify the type
Inguinal hernia: tissue protrudes into the groin.
Umbilical hernia: a bulge develops through a weak area at the belly button.
Ventral hernia: a bulge develops through another weak area of the abdominal wall, including a previous surgical site.
What determines the timing of adult hernia surgery?
Once a hernia is confirmed, its location, symptoms, and the possibility of tissue becoming trapped help determine when to operate. A bulge moving back inside does not mean the opening has closed. Tell the surgeon about recurring bulges or changes in pain.
For older adults or people with other medical conditions, age alone does not determine suitability for surgery. Damsoyu assesses medical history, including cardiovascular and respiratory conditions.
Laparoscopy describes how the operation is performed using a camera; mesh is the material used to reinforce the repair. Damsoyu commonly closes the opening and reinforces it with mesh in adult men. Its FAQ notes that mesh use may differ for some adolescents and women, depending on their condition.
What can the surgeon see during laparoscopy?
A camera inserted through a small incision provides a magnified view of the hernia and surrounding tissue. For a groin hernia, the surgeon can also inspect the other side. Inspecting both sides does not automatically mean repairing both; the findings help determine the extent of treatment.
Does all fat near an inguinal hernia need to be removed?
Damsoyu researchers distinguished true lipomas from preperitoneal fat extending into the inguinal canal. They studied removal of the lipomas and returning connected preperitoneal fat to its original position.
Who was studied
A retrospective review of 2,465 adults who underwent laparoscopic TAPP repair in 2019–2023 identified 271 patients with inguinal canal fat for analysis.
How to interpret this study
The groups had different types of fatty tissue, so the study cannot show that leaving fat in place is better for every patient. What to remove depends on what the surgeon finds during the operation.

The team uses the consultation and test results to decide whether surgery is needed, then monitors recovery afterward. If you plan to have surgery on the day of your appointment, ask how to prepare and how long to expect to stay when booking.
Booking and preparation
Bring recent test results, a medication list, and details of previous surgery or anesthesia. Follow the fasting and medication instructions given for your appointment.
Consultation and tests
The surgeon checks the location, whether one or both sides are affected, and any previous repairs. Ultrasound may help when the diagnosis is unclear. The surgical plan includes whether mesh will be used.
Surgery and anesthesia
The team explains the planned operation and arranges preoperative tests. An anesthesiologist manages anesthesia and monitors you during surgery.
Recovery and discharge
The team checks your recovery from anesthesia and surgery before deciding when you can leave. Before discharge, confirm instructions for meals, wound care, activity, and contacting the hospital.
The official fee schedule lists individual items such as rooms, tests, materials and certificates. A personal surgical estimate depends on the treatment plan and insurance eligibility.
Which existing reports can be used, and which further tests are planned?
Repair and materials
Does the estimate reflect one or both sides, a repeat repair and any planned mesh?
Anesthesia and stay
What observation, admission and anesthesia items are included?
Follow-up
Are medicines, wound checks and further visits included?
Use this checklist to ask what applies to your care. Items are not necessarily required or included in an estimate.
Check whether the estimate covers one or both sides, a repeat repair, mesh, anesthesia, and hospitalization. An individual item on the published fee list is not the total cost of hernia surgery.
Preparing insurance documents
Ask your insurer which documents it needs, then request them from the hospital. Damsoyu offers admission/discharge certificates, treatment/attendance certificates, and medical certificates in Korean or English. Outpatients and patients who have been discharged register and speak with the treating doctor before applying. Inpatients are advised to ask the ward nurse the day before discharge. Check the fee for each document.
Ask the hospital how your care will be billed. Ask your insurer whether the proposed treatment abroad is covered, whether prior approval is needed and which documents to keep. Check any Korean health insurance eligibility separately if it is relevant to you.
When can I return to work and exercise after hernia surgery?
According to Damsoyu’s FAQ, patients who feel well may return to daily activities and work the next day. Those who feel uncomfortable should rest. The FAQ gives about one week as a general guide for hiking or exercise that strains the abdomen, as distinct from light activity. Your return depends on the operation, your workload, and your recovery.
Returning to work and exercise after hernia repair
Tell the team whether your work involves sitting, standing for long periods, or heavy lifting. The advice about returning the next day applies only if you feel well enough.
Hiking and activities that strain the abdomen differ from light activity. Follow your discharge instructions and avoid forcing yourself to meet a planned return date if you still feel uncomfortable.
